The WCSD is facing an estimated $75 million budget shortfall due to anticipated loss of local, state and federal funding. This is in addition to the $73 million the District has cut during the last four years.

At the same time as the school district is making substantial progress toward education reform that will better prepare all children for a successful future, WCSD is also facing severe, proposed budget reductions that will restrict those efforts and impact our children. Decisions still need to be made at the Nevada Legislature that ultimately will decide the level of funding. WCSD has been planning how best to align anticipated resources with the District's strategic plan.

You are invited to a news conference next week in which Superintendent Dr. Heath Morrison will detail the initial recommendations he will present to the WCSD Board of Trustees as part of the budget process. He will also discuss the next steps, including a series of townhall meetings to gather more input from parents, WCSD staff and community members.

EVENT UPDATE

The WCSD Press Conference was very informative. Senator Raggio attended with no special invitation and clarified, that as the creator of the sunsetting taxes, the intent was for the current legislature to review the need for them in the current economic climate and renew them if the economy hadn't improved substantially.
